Who Runs LumpyMailPens
LumpyMailPens is Lumpy Mail Pens — a trading name of Paul Jones (sole trader) — a one-person direct-mail business in Liverpool, Merseyside. Paul builds the targeting software, writes the letters, packs the pens and answers the phone. There is no call centre and no account manager: when you ring 0151 453 1773 you get him.
Why Physical Mail
Because a letter with something solid inside it does not get filtered, muted or scrolled past. It has to be picked up, and once the pen is out of the envelope it sits on a desk for months. Email is cheap and easy to ignore. Our whole approach is the opposite: fewer pieces, aimed at the right people, that survive the walk from the doormat to the desk.
The Problem
Most direct mail is untargeted junk. Companies buy generic mailing lists, send identical letters to everyone, and get 0.5% response rates. 99.5% goes in the bin. That's not marketing — that's littering with postage.
Our Approach
We built something different. We analyse 37 government and public data sources — from Companies House business filings to ONS Census demographics, council tax bands to planning applications — to understand exactly who lives and works in your target area. Then we send a lumpy mail letter (with a branded pen inside) to the people most likely to need your service. Warm, targeted direct mail like this averages a 7.2% response rate and £9 back for every £1 spent (JICMAIL Response Rate Tracker, 2025), versus around 0.9% for untargeted cold mail (JICMAIL, 2025).
